ラッコファンの皆様、それから、ラッコ？ふ～ん、程度にしかラッコを知らない方もはじめまして。

らっこちゃんねるへようこそ！

 

私は現在アメリカ・カリフォルニアに住んでいます。ここには、希少生物である野生のカリフォルニアラッコが生息しています。

 

水族館で愛嬌をふりまくラッコももちろんかわいいですが、厳しい自然を生き抜いているたくましい野生のラッコたちの姿に魅了されました。そして、キーストーン種として海の多様性に貢献しているラッコの役割や、絶滅危惧種となったラッコを守るために惜しみない愛情を注ぐアメリカの人々の姿にも、また心を揺さぶられました。

 

かつてはラッコが生息し、そして毛皮貿易時代にラッコの乱獲にも関わってしまった日本。そういう意味では、日本もラッコの保護活動に対して責任を負っているのではないでしょうか。しかし、今は野生のラッコが少ないためか、残念ながら日本ではそうした保護活動や啓蒙活動が積極的に行われている気配がありません。

 

愛すべきラッコたちと、ラッコを取り巻く環境、そしてアメリカにおけるラッコの保護活動を少しでも多く日本の方に知っていただきたくて、このウェブサイトを作成しました。そしていつか、日本に本格的にラッコが戻ってくる日が来たら、その時に少しでも多くの方がラッコの保護に協力してくださればいいなと思います。

 

私はラッコの専門家でも翻訳家でもなんでもなく、野生のラッコを見たり調べたりするのが好きな一般人です。

The Japanese word for sea otter 'rakko' comes from Ainu, the language of indigenous people in northern Japan.

 

Sea otters used to thrive in the northern part of Japan, but there are very few spotted in the wild now. Many sea otters were imported from the US and Russia by 2000s for exhibition in aquariums and there were as many as 122 animals in captivity in 1990s. US no longer allows Japanese aquariums to capture and export wild sea otters because most of them do not meet the US standards. The number of sea otters in captivity has declined to 13 animals as of March 2016. As most of them are not young enough for reproduction, it is said that sea otters may disappear from Japanese aquariums in near future. It is sad, but I believe that it is more preferable for sea otters to thrive in the wild than  in captivity. There are many people still fascinated by sea otters over there in Japan, but not many of them know the current issues and threats sea otters face. They don't even know that sea otters are listed as threatened or they play a important role in nearshore ecosystem. I think it is because they have few chances to access such information in Japanese while there are lots of articles and videos about sea otters and sea otter conservation available in English. This is why I started this website.

 

I hope this website will open a door for Japanese people to know more about sea otters, through which they could be aware of the importance of protecting this beautiful endangered animals as well as give a little change to their behavior to improve the environment they live in. And I hope Japanese people are well-prepared to take appropriate action when sea otters makes a comeback to Japan in near future.
